From Shipping Container to Medical Clinic: Clinic in a Can Brings Healthcare to Developing Countries

is sometimes easy for us to take for granted our access to even basic health care in the United States. We enjoy the luxury and simple medical care such as pain medicine and Neosporin, and the ability to get casts for broken limbs and stitches for a gaping wound. Unfortunately, in many developing countries, health care is limited, both in the quality of treatment and number of facilities that can provide treatment. Unfortunately, as a result, many people needlessly die before they are able to receive basic medical attention.

The JFK Memorial Medical Center in Monrovia, Liberia, a man limped into the emergency room. He lived in a remote part of Liberia and that has gotten a little poisonous snake while working in the field. Since there is a high quality clinic nearby, he first visited a witch doctor who basically only apply fertilizer in the leg. After his legs just got worse, not better, walked two days in the hospital for treatment. The moment he arrived, his leg was so swollen that he could barely walk. He desperately needed the right anti-venom to counter-act the poison that has already worked his way through his body. He was immediately treated for snake bite, but it is necessary to have a leg that included gangrene amputated. Because in our culture would be seen as worthless if he did not have the legs he would rather die than his leg amputated. His condition worsened and he died hours later.

This is a tragic experience like this that inspired medical mission non-profit based in Wichita, Kansas, the hospital hopes to find innovative and practical way to provide basic medical care that is needed throughout the world.

One of the most exciting way to work to prevent unnecessary deaths and provide quality medical care from the hospital in the can program.
